Podcast Recommendations Part 1

I was planning to do a heap of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend analysis posts, which hopefully I will still do in the future, but I’ve been feeling too stressed for deep analysis so I haven’t done them yet. But writing makes me feel better, so here’s a heap of podcasts I listen to (taken alphabetically from my list of shows on the Apple Podcasts app) and some details on whether I recommend it or not, and why.

Note: Pay attention to the tense of my review. If it’s in the present e.g. “I like it” then I’m still listening but I’ve listened to a fair amount to have a valid opinion. If it’s past tense e.g. “I didn’t like it” then it has an ending and I’ve finished it before forming this opinion. If it’s progressive e.g. “I’m liking it” then I haven’t listened to very much of it so my opinion is still early days.

36 Questions – The Podcast Musical

Overall Review: I liked it.

Pros:

·       Musical!! With Jonathon Groff!!

·       There’s a cute sideplot about a duck or a goose or something, idk it’s been a while since I listened.

·       Only 3 episodes so not a huge commitment.

·       The 36 Questions are pretty interesting to look up and discuss with people.

Cons:

·       Weird storyline tbh.

·       Songs aren’t actually that great.

Alba Salix, Royal Physician

Overall Review: I like it.

Pros:

·       Fun, light, fantasy storyline.

·       Cool music.

·       Occasional fun cameos by people I know from other podcasts.

Cons:

·       Half the time it’s not Alba Salix, it’s The Ax and Crown, which I didn’t like as much.

·       Can be too silly.

Alice Isn’t Dead

Overall Review: I loved it.

Pros:

·       Creepy, but in a good way.

·       Good depiction of anxiety and how you can be anxious but still get sh*t done.

·       Interesting depiction of American trucker/road trip culture.

·       It’s finished and I do love a complete story arc.

Cons:

·       Creepy.

·       Not always easy to follow the plot.

All In My Head

Overall Review: I’m liking it.

Pros:

·       Excellent suggestion of a conspiracy or “something deeper going on”.

·       Got me curious from episode one.

Cons:

·       Lots of screaming.

·       Protagonist not that interesting, possibly a bit generic in a bad way.

Always Was, Always Will Be Our Stories

Haven’t started yet.

Added to my list because:

·       It’s an Aussie podcast featuring Aboriginal stories.

·       Seemed important to listen to.

And 195

Haven’t started yet.

Added to my list because:

·       It’s a comedy/magical realism – I’m excited for this!

·       Features a nonbinary character.

Arden

Overall Review: I loved it! (Although there is another season coming.)

Pros:

·       It’s secretly Shakespeare!!

·       Very funny.

·       Intriguing mystery.

·       Fun riff on true crime investigation podcasts.

Cons:

·       ?? Honestly, it’s so good.

ars Paradoxica

Overall Review: I loved it!

Pros:

·       Awesome sci-fi story featuring time travel.

·       Funny at times but also dramatic and exciting at others.

·       Features an asexual character.

Cons:

·       Title starts with a lowercase letter which is a bitch to type because of autocorrect.

Becoming Mother Nature

Overall Review: I like it.

Pros:

·       Really high production quality.

·       Appropriate for children.

·       Exciting story!

Cons:

·       A bit childish at times.

·       Heavy-handed with its environmental message although I do acknowledge it’s an important one.

·       Also, SPOILER, but… the environmentalist was sort of the villain? Weird flex.

Blackout

Haven’t started yet.

Added to my list because:

·       Stars Rami Malek.

·       Apocalyptic thriller sounds interesting.

Blackwood

Overall Review: I didn’t like it that much.

Pros:

·       Builds suspense pretty well.

Cons:

·       The whole thing just seemed like an overdone idea.

·       And it was poorly plotted imo.

·       Nothing really original or special about it.

Body Horror

Haven’t started yet.

Added to my list because:

·       Sci-fi!

·       Hopefully not too scary.

·       Hot girl in the thumbnail.

BOOM: A Serial Drama

Overall Review: Average all around.

Pros:

·       Compelling story that has me wanting to know what happens in the end.

Cons:

·       Characters can be stupid and frustrating.

·       There’s some narration which as a general rule I don’t love.

CARAVAN

Haven’t started yet.

Added to my list because:

·       It’s made by the Whisperforge, who also made ars Paradoxica among other great audio dramas, so it’ll probably be great.

Crazy Ex-GirlFans: Your Internet Gabfest About Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Overall Review: I loved it.

Pros:

·       First podcast I ever listened to!

·       Lots of fun.

·       Great way to take a deep dive into the show.

Cons:

·       Sounds levels can be all over the place.

·       Not interesting if you don’t care about the show, probably.

Cybernautica

Haven’t started yet.

Added to my list because:

·       Cyberpunk audiodrama!

More reviews coming, probably!
